How Do I Go About Saving For Retirement?
The most important part of saving towards retirement is to have an accurate assessment of what you can expect your retirement to be like. For example, how long have you got until you retire, when you do expect to retire, what is your standard of living at the moment and how close do you wish to replicate this level of income and standard of living in retirement.

Make Sure You Have a Plan

Everything is about a plan. If you decide to go on a trip from your house to another town 100 miles away you would probably need to get some form of directions or map in place before you leave in order to tell you how to get there. You may well look at the various options and decide which is the more convenient or quickest way. You have a guide or a plan which takes you in the right direction and gets you to your destination. Retirement planning is no different. It is very important that the two component parts of your plan are in place: which are your predicted retirement date and the amount of money you will need for the rest of your retirement years from that date. Our on-line tool which helps you to calculate how much you need to retire will be very valuable in this regard.

Start Early

The most important point about retirement planning is that it is not something that starts on a particular day and one of the most challenging aspects of the retirement area and the retirement industry is getting people of all ages to recognise that retirement planning is something that spans the whole of their working life.

Historically people have not worried about planning for their retirement until they start reaching certain critical ages, 40 and 50 being good examples – these are often ages when people begin to think of retirement planning. In many cases this is simply too late and as suggested elsewhere on this site we may well have been deceived in the past over rising property prices, over generous company schemes and Government pensions into believing that retirement planning is something that can be rushed towards the end of a working life.

Retirement planning should start in the early 20’s or when an individual first starts work. We will show elsewhere on this site the power of starting early and the enormous difference this makes to the eventual outcome.
